For some, one race became the beginning of a tradition that has lasted for years—and even decades. As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary in 2027, we’re celebrating the runners who have continued to show up, lace up and make Cleveland Marathon history year after year. Whether they’ve run 10 Cleveland races or all 49, these runners are an important part of the UH Cleveland Marathon story. The Road to 50 49 Races. One More to Go. Three runners have raced every year since 1978 and plan to return in 2027 for their 50th Cleveland Marathon race. Rudy Murn Preparing for his 50th Cleveland Race Rudy Murn’s Cleveland story began with the 10K in 1978. He wasn’t a runner and competed in basketball shoes, but once he finished, he was hooked. He later completed the marathon in 3:46, beating his four-hour goal. In 2027, Rudy will complete his 50th Cleveland race, and he still has every bib, shirt and race result from along the way. John Roos 49 Cleveland 10Ks — and counting John Roos has completed an incredible 49 Cleveland 10Ks, making him one of the UH Cleveland Marathon’s most dedicated Legacy Runners. For nearly five decades, John has returned to the streets of Cleveland to take part in this special race and be part of its history. In 2027, he plans to return for his 50th Cleveland 10K. Anita Stewart 49 Cleveland Races — and counting Anita Stewart is a true UH Cleveland Marathon Legacy Runner, having participated in all 49 races throughout the event’s history. She often runs the 5K or 10K and even kept her streak alive by completing the virtual 10K during COVID-19. Now, Anita is getting ready to return for the 50th Anniversary in 2027 and add another race to her incredible Cleveland Marathon legacy. 40+ Club Celebrating 40+ Cleveland Races Every number represents years of training, race mornings, finish lines and memories made in Cleveland. Rick Labus 47 Cleveland races and counting Rick participated in the inaugural UH Cleveland Marathon in 1978 and has since completed 47 Cleveland races, including 28 full marathons. In 2027, he plans to return at age 84 to complete the half marathon. “Running with thousands of fellow runners and being cheered on by enthusiastic spectators has always been a thrilling experience!” Ronald Ross Running his 41st Cleveland Marathon in 2027 Cleveland native Ron Ross has completed 40 UH Cleveland Marathons, always choosing the full 26.2-mile distance. His favorite was in 1983, when he set a 2:38 personal record with his family waiting at the finish line. He plans to return for number 41 at the 50th Anniversary race. 40+ Cleveland Runners Glenn Friedman • Ralph Lowery • Francis “Bud” McNellie 30+ Club Maureen Scullin 36+ Cleveland races and counting Maureen Scullin ran her first UH Cleveland Marathon event in 1988, taking on the 10K as a beginner runner. Her biggest memory? “I just remember it being hot; I was out of shape!” Since then, Maureen has returned year after year, completing 36+ races, mostly half marathons, and becoming a longtime part of the Cleveland family. In 2027, she’ll be back to celebrate the 50th Anniversary and add another chapter to her Cleveland Marathon story. 30+ Cleveland Runners Robert Partezana • Karl Sundkvist • Rich Oldrieve • Dwight Morgan 20+ Club Dan Horvath 23 Cleveland races and counting Dan Horvath completed his first marathon at Cleveland’s inaugural race in 1978, finishing in 3:04. After ending up in the medical tent, he told his wife, “Never again!” Since then, he has completed 22 more Cleveland races. Overall, Dan has completed more than 130 marathons and 40 ultramarathons and plans to return for Cleveland’s 50th Anniversary in May 2027. Bill Robb 20 Cleveland races and counting Bill Robb first participated in the Cleveland 10K in 1980 and completed his first UH Cleveland Marathon two years later. In 2027, he will return to the full marathon for the first time in 17 years, marking his 20th UH Cleveland Marathon and 46th marathon overall.
