legacy runners

runners who keep coming back!

For nearly 49 years, thousands of runners have crossed the finish line at the UH Cleveland Marathon. For some, one race became the beginning of a tradition that has lasted for years—and even decades.

As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary in 2027, we’re celebrating the runners who have continued to show up, lace up and make Cleveland Marathon history year after year.

Whether they’ve run 10 Cleveland races or all 49, these runners are an important part of the UH Cleveland Marathon story. Scroll down to see all of the loyalty runners!

The Road to 50

49 Races. One More to Go.

Three runners have raced every year since 1978 and plan to return in 2027 for their 50th Cleveland Marathon race.

Rudy Murn

Preparing for his 50th Cleveland Race

Rudy Murn’s Cleveland story began with the 10K in 1978. He wasn’t a runner and competed in basketball shoes, but once he finished, he was hooked.

He later completed the marathon in 3:46, beating his four-hour goal. In 2027, Rudy will complete his 50th Cleveland race, and he still has every bib, shirt and race result from along the way.

John Roos

49 Cleveland 10Ks — and counting

John Roos has completed an incredible 49 Cleveland 10Ks, making him one of the UH Cleveland Marathon’s most dedicated Legacy Runners.

For nearly five decades, John has returned to the streets of Cleveland to take part in this special race and be part of its history. In 2027, he plans to return for his 50th Cleveland 10K.

Anita Stewart

49 Cleveland Races — and counting

Anita Stewart is a true UH Cleveland Marathon Legacy Runner, having participated in all 49 races throughout the event’s history. She often runs the 5K or 10K and even kept her streak alive by completing the virtual 10K during COVID-19.

Now, Anita is getting ready to return for the 50th Anniversary in 2027 and add another race to her incredible Cleveland Marathon legacy.
