2020 Cleveland Marathon Ambassadors

 Allisonweb

Allison Szedlock

Cleveland Marathon Ambassador Program Manager

Allison is a mother, 5AM runner, and most often on weekends when she's not running, she's timing a race. This past summer she took a leap of faith and left her job as a high school special education teacher to pursue a full-time career in the running world. It’s safe to say that she loves everything about the running community! Allison began running in college - she spent all summer of her senior year training for the NYC Marathon, but a week before the race, Allison was diagnosed with lupus and anemia and was unable to run. After her diagnosis, she took a few years off to focus on her overall health. Once things stabilized, she slowly began to increase her mileage and ran her first half marathon in 2013 and became hooked on distance running. Allison decided to give the full marathon distance another chance after her daughter was born and the Marine Corps Marathon in 2015. She has continued to run marathons since and sees no slowing down in the near future. The Cleveland Marathon will forever be one of her favorites because of the beautiful course and crowd support. 2020 will be her fourth year back and third year running the full marathon!

Brianburke

Brian Burk

Brian is a Mechanical Skills Instructor with a Fortune 100 company, living and working out of North Carolina and Virginia, although originally from Erie, Pennsylvania. Prior to his present position, he retired from the United States Air Force after serving as a Senior Noncommissioned Officer (SMSgt). During a 20-year military career, he served stateside and toured overseas, including a remote tour to Thule, Greenland and a combat tour in Northern Iraq. Not a natural runner, Brian found his passion for running in his 30s. Since then, he completed race distances from 5k to 100-miles. Likewise, writing came on late. Brian could tell a gripping story, but found it hard to get it onto paper.  His works include his first novel, Running to Leadville and 26.2 Tips to run your best MARATHON. His third book remains unfinished. He has also been published in national running publications, running theme blogs, and his blog at Brian’s Running Adventures.

Melissa Koski Carney (known as @koskim on social media) is an Ohio transplant from New York. A 30-something mom of two, she recently moved with her family from their downtown apartment to a nearly 100-year-old home in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. When she's not running, she enjoys baking, reading, and chasing after her 3- and 1-year-old kids. She blogs regularly at I Crashed The Web.

Jeffedwardsweb

Jeff Edwards

Running wasn’t always Jeff’s thing to do, as it was normally only done for other sports or while in the Air Force. That all changed a few years ago when he decided that running was a need to change from the unhealthy lifestyle that wasn’t working anymore. Then came the first 5k, which was rough to say the least. That race left him frustrated, but determined to do better. He started challenging himself, doing a 5k once a month, but always swore off anything of further distance... now, 27 halfs and 5 fulls later, he has found new ways to challenge himself! Jeff says the best part of running has been all the fun he’s had and of course all the new friends he’s made along the way! Born and raised in the Cleveland area, he always looks forward to marathon weekend in his city!

Ericgeyerweb

Eric Geyer

Eric started running marathons with the 2010 Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon and has run it every year since then. Running has become a passion of his, taking him and his wife to remote places to attempt trail races and to other big cities. When he’s not running, Eric is filling prescriptions and trying to provide patients and physicians with the best advice he can as a pharmacist. Standing for hours on end can make staying in shape for marathons difficult, but he always tries to prioritize time for running. Leading by example is important to Eric and has allowed him at times to create bonds with his patients, some of whom he sees out on race day! The best part of running to Eric is the camaraderie that allows all runners to share, no matter their speed or ability.

Emilyleeweb

Emily Lee

Emily has been a runner for 18-ish years! She started competing at a young age in local road races, moved onto cross country & track, and continued to race on her own through graduate school. Cleveland was her first half in 2014 and her return to the full marathon after a 7 year hiatus of that distance in 2017. She has a BIG love for CLE and is so thankful to return as an ambassador again for 2020… which will be extra special, as it will be her first goal race post-baby! Aside from running, Emily enjoys family time with my husband and fur-babies, soaking in their last moments before they add a human baby in December! As well as adventuring, checking out local eats, and working as a school counselor. She looks forward to seeing you at the starting line in May!

Jennmerlinweb

Jenn Merlin

Jenn is from Oshawa, Ontario, Canada – about an hour outside of Toronto. She has been running for just over 7 years after she signed up for a ‘learn to run’ clinic at her local running store to help build her cardio to prepare for playing soccer. It was supposed to be a means to an end and here she is now, running and no longer playing soccer. Running is Jenn’s way of keeping herself sane and it definitely helps burn the calories from the beers. Cleveland is a special race for her because of the amazing spectators, the great route, the fabulous medals and of course, the beer garden at the finish line. Cheers.

Jensolanics

Jen Solanics

Jen completed her first 5k in October 2016 and still considers herself a newer runner. Jen grew up hating running, but made a goal to complete a 5k. Like most first races, it didn't go well, but she didn't give up! Instead, Jen found a running community she loves and has since completed more than 10 half marathons and various Ragnar races. She swore she would never do a full marathon, but completed her first full in May 2019 at the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon! Jen lives in Dayton, OH, but grew up in a suburb of Cleveland. She loves the city and its sports teams. When she isn't running, Jen enjoys playing sand volleyball and softball, baking, and crafting. Jen’s favorite thing about the running community is that everyone always supports and encourages each other, no matter whether you're a 5-minute miler or a 14-minute miler.

Mary Sutter

Mary began running as a part of a major weight loss journey, but it has become so much more than that! It is therapy, a way to stay healthy, and has also become a way to see different parts of the country. What better way to see a city than run 13.1 miles through it? Ok… maybe running 26.2 miles through it!

Marissaward

Marissa Ward

Marissa started running distance in 2014 as a way to stay healthy and active. While on vacation to OBX, she ran her first race and realized it was something she really enjoyed. That fall, she walked onto the cross country team at Cleveland State. She always had the idea of running a marathon in her head, but assumed it would be a "one and done" kind of thing.  After qualifying for Boston in her first marathon, it became an addiction. 13 marathons later, it is by far her favorite distance. Now she trains daily with her dog and pushes her daughter in the jogging stroller. Marissa's long-term marathon goals are to run a marathon in every state (8 down, 42 to go!) and complete the World Marathon Majors Challenge all under 3 hours (halfway there with 3 out of 6!).
