The four-time champion is gearing up for the 2026 University Hospitals Cleveland Marathon.

Running roughly 70 to 80 miles a week is routine for Ashton Swinford, a four-time University Hospitals (UH) Cleveland Marathon champion (2022, 2023, 2024, 2025), a five-time marathon winner overall, and a mother of two from Hudson, Ohio.

Between early-morning runs, school drop-offs, and caring for twins, Swinford has built one of the most consistent winning streaks in the history of the UH Cleveland Marathon women's division.

She is returning this spring for her seventh UH Cleveland Marathon appearance and 27th marathon overall.

Swinford's race success would not be possible without the support of her husband, she said.

“We are a team,” Swinford said. “We are both athletes. He's a cyclist. We both understand how important training is to us. There's always a bit of a trade-off with training and watching the kids.”

Much of her training is built around her family’s schedule, she said.

“During the weekdays, I can run when my kids are at school. I take care of them, take them to school, and then have time to run. ”

That consistency has played a key role in her success, though her path to marathon running has been a long one.

From Past to Present

Swinford grew up as a gymnast and later competed in track and field as a hurdler and pole vaulter before shifting her focus to cross country in college.

“When I went to college, I decided to walk onto the cross country team so I could spend more time with my now husband and best friend,” she said. “I was not particularly good at it, but I really enjoyed running long distances.”

That enjoyment turned into consistency.

Swinford has been running nearly every day for the past 17 years, steadily building toward the level she competes at today.

After college, she transitioned into longer races, beginning with half marathons before completing her first marathon in 2016.

“I really enjoyed the new challenge of such a long distance,” she said. “It felt like such an adventure.”

Swinford ran her first UH Cleveland Marathon in 2017.

What started as a local race has since become the foundation of her winning streak. Swinford captured her first UH Cleveland Marathon title in 2022, a moment she still considers one of the most meaningful of her career.

“I wasn't expecting to win the race [in 2022]. I knew I was in good shape, but there are always good competitors,” she said. “I was in second place for a majority of the race, but I took the lead around the halfway mark. … From there, I was running on adrenaline.”

As she approached the finish line, the moment became unforgettable.

“Coming down the straightaway was like everything I’d ever dreamed of,” she said. “There were people lined up on both sides of the street, cheering. There was a banner that said ‘Cleveland Marathon.’ It was the first time I'd ever broken tape.”

“That made me really want to continue running at a fairly high level to chase that feeling again,” she added.

That feeling, along with the support from the Cleveland community, continues to draw her back each year.

“The more times I come to Cleveland, the more recognizable I become. …. I get a few more cheers, which is incredibly encouraging and uplifting, and I feel the support when I come back to the race,” she said.

Now with five marathon wins, four in Cleveland and one at the 2025 Akron Marathon, Swinford credits her success to years of steady progress.

“It's taken 17 years of training, and I get a little bit better each year,” she said. “Consistency can pay off. … If you have a running goal, you have to stick with it. It may take a very long time. I can speak from experience. It's taken so long for me to get to this level.”

Even with the demands of training and racing, Swinford views running as essential to her daily life.

“Running makes me a better parent, and I feel like I'm a better person once I get my running done,” she said.

After each race, she sets a new goal and continues forward, rarely taking extended breaks from training.

For those considering signing up for the UH Cleveland Marathon, whether it is their first race or their next challenge, Swinford offers simple advice: “Go for it.”

“It's so much fun to set a goal and to chase after it. You may surprise yourself,” she said. “It could be totally worth it, and if it doesn't work out, you still will learn from it, and maybe you'll do better next time.”

She also emphasized the flexibility of the race weekend.

“There are different race day options [during] the UH Cleveland Marathon weekend. So you can always adjust your goals if you feel like things aren't panning out,” she said. “In general, I would encourage anybody to set a goal and go after it. It doesn't matter so much if you reach it or not because you focus on the process and learn along the way regardless.”

Greetings from Joplin, MO! My name is Fran. I’m a wife of almost 29 years and mother of three grown kids. I’m originally from Ohio. I grew up running—-field day in elementary all the way to track and cross country in high school and ran some track at a Junior College in Oklahoma.

I was mainly a sprinter in school, but my high school coach at the time suggested I run cross country to help better my 400 meter races. 400 felt like a marathon at the time! I was terrified running 3.1 miles—what?! Well, my coach (no longer living) convinced me that I ended up running cross country. It made me a better sprinter. It earned me a few state titles in my sprints and sprint relays with awesome teammates!

As I got older and no longer running, I was asked to help coach track at my kids’ private school. I ended up doing it and loved it! It brought back memories of my running days and I caught the bug. In my 40’s the time, I was so inspired by the track kids and wanted to start running 5K’s again. It’s funny to think that my coach wanted me to run cross country to supplement my sprint races.

Anyways, I went on to sign up for 5Ks and started training. I had my high school coach on Facebook and would see my posts about my training. He’d tell me not to do too much too soon because one day early in the training I was feeling ran almost 7 miles! He was right!

So, 5Ks turned into half marathons. After about three of them I got curious about the marathon. At the time I watched Kara Goucher run the Boston Marathon—WOW! Watching the marathon got me dreaming of running the Boston Marathon one day. I got on YouTube and searched marathon blogs and motivational stories. Fast forward maybe two years later or so and I qualified for the Boston Marathon, Chicago Marathon and completed both.

I wanted to come back to Ohio where my running all started and run a marathon in my home state! I’m happy to be signed up to run my 18th full marathon at the Cleveland Marathon!!!

Why run a marathon?

As the popularity of marathons grows, so does the recognition of one key ingredient for success: endurance. It's the ability to sustain prolonged physical or mental effort, a critical component in long-distance running. Hence, build your endurance, whether running as a seasoned runner eyeing a new personal best or a newcomer with dreams of crossing your first finish line.

In this article, we discuss various endurance-building activities to prepare your body and mind for the demands of a marathon.

Endurance in Marathon Training

Endurance enables you to manage fatigue, resist pain, and push through mental barriers.

There are two primary types of endurance: aerobic and anaerobic. Aerobic endurance refers to your ability to perform moderate-intensity activities over extended periods by utilizing oxygen to generate energy.

On the other hand, anaerobic endurance involves your ability to perform high-intensity activities for short durations without relying on oxygen for energy production. Instead, your body uses energy sources stored directly in the muscles, which produces lactic acid as a byproduct.

Therefore, whether you are looking to get a roadbike for gravel cycling or adding long runs to your routine, balancing training to enhance both types of endurance can improve overall marathon performance. Below are activities to consider.

Core Endurance Activities for Marathon Training

Long Runs

Long runs are a staple in any marathon training program, typically involving a steady run at a relaxed pace. They develop aerobic endurance, enhance cardiovascular efficiency, and teach the body to burn fat as a fuel source, conserving glycogen reserves for the later stages of a race.

Additionally, long runs strengthen the musculoskeletal system and improve mental toughness, one of the psychological demands of marathon racing.

To increase your running distance safely, you can follow the 10% rule—never increase your weekly total mileage or the distance by more than 10% weekly. This gradual progression helps avoid injury and allows the body to adapt. Further, you can incorporate recovery weeks every 3-4 weeks, where mileage is reduced by 20-30%.

Interval Training

It involves alternating between periods of high-intensity effort and low-intensity recovery. Such training can improve aerobic and anaerobic fitness, increase cardiovascular efficiency, and boost calorie burn and metabolism. The high-intensity intervals push the body to adapt by improving the efficiency of the processes that convert oxygen and stored glycogen into energy.

A popular interval training workout for marathon preparation might include 400-meter repeats at a pace faster than the race pace with equal time or distance for recovery jogs. For example, you can run 8x400 meters with 400 meters of light jogging or walks in between. Another example could be ladder workouts, where distances and intensities vary, such as 400m, 800m, 1200m, 800m, and 400m intervals, each followed by equal time recovery periods.

Tempo Runs

Tempo runs, also known as threshold runs, require a comfortably hard pace that you can sustain for at least 20 minutes. The main benefit of tempo running is that it trains the body to sustain speed over distance.

You do this by increasing your lactate threshold, the point during intense exercise when lactate (a byproduct of glucose metabolism) accumulates in the bloodstream faster than you can eliminate it. This accumulation can lead to fatigue and a decrease in performance. For most runners, this threshold occurs at around 75-90% of their maximum heart rate.

As such, endurance training helps your body process and tolerate lactate more efficiently by running at or below your lactate threshold pace.

Incorporate tempo runs into a marathon training regimen once a week. Start with a warm-up of 10-15 minutes of easy running, then transition to 20 minutes at a tempo pace, and finish with a 10-minute cooldown. As fitness improves, the duration of the tempo portion can gradually increase up to 40 minutes or split into multiple segments with short rest intervals.

Supplementary Endurance Exercises

Cross-Training

Cross-training incorporates various forms of exercise other than running to improve overall fitness and endurance. For example, cycling uses the leg muscles in a low-impact way. As such, it improves cardiovascular endurance while giving the joints a break from the pounding they receive from running.

On the other hand, swimming is a total-body workout that enhances cardiovascular fitness and builds upper-body strength. It helps in recovery, as the buoyancy of the water supports the body and alleviates stress on all joints and muscles.

Strength Training

Strength training strengthens muscles and joints to absorb the impact of running better and maintain form even when you experience fatigue. It also helps improve your running economy, which is the amount of energy expended at a given pace, making running faster and less taxing.

Strength training exercises include lunges, squats, planks, bicycle crunches, and Russian twists.

Conclusion

Endurance activities are the cornerstone of successful marathon training, underpinning every step from the initial training phases to the race. These activities, ranging from long runs to interval and tempo workouts, enhance the physiological capacity needed for long-distance running and fortify mental resilience.

Furthermore, supplementary exercises like cross-training and strength training prevent overuse injuries by balancing muscle use and improving overall physical condition. Ultimately, engaging in these diverse endurance activities equips you with the stamina, speed, and strength to participate in a marathon.

Carli was someone who lit up the world with her smile, always putting others before herself. Before her passing, she created “POP: Petals of Promise," making blankets by hand filled with love so that she could donate the proceeds to Prayers From Maria.

The more time that passed, the more I worked to become involved with the foundation. This past summer, I had the opportunity to participate and raise funds for VeloSano and ride in honor of Carli. I am extremely grateful for being able to participate in an event that helps raise so much awareness. The Sunflower Striders is a fantastic group that I am proud to be a part of this year! I have decided to run for those who are unable to. I am honored to spread such a powerful message in our society.

The Children's Cancer Research Fund only receives around 4% of federal funding from the National Cancer Institute Budget. As a community, we need to come together and help these research facilities to assist children like Carli in escaping this terrible disease. There are numerous ways to help, including buying blankets for family and friends, volunteering, participating in 5ks, donating, and much more!”

I am running to help in raise more funds and awareness for this incredibly important cause."

My passion lead me to becoming a certified trainer and fitness coach. I wanted others to find a love in movement, and be proud of what their body can accomplish . Encouraging clients to fight for their goals and what they want is a big part of what I do. Excuses can often make their way to the forefront, and I have to work with them to not give in to those excuses. Well, now it’s my turn to not give in to excuses! I completed my last marathon in 2008 when I was 28. I always told myself I would complete another before I turned 40 years old. 40 came and went. I’m a mom, a wife and a coach, but I was using those as excuses. As I tell my clients “ giving in to your excuses will make today easy, but they will make your tomorrow that much harder” . So now, it’s my turn to fight for my finish line!
