2021 union home mortgage Cleveland Marathon important race updates

The Union Home Mortgage Cleveland Marathon in-person race, scheduled for May 15-16, has been postponed until the fall due to COVID-19.

The marathon team is committed to holding a safe in-person event and has been working closely with health officials at the City of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County and the State of Ohio since the summer of 2020 to do so. Ultimately, the city advised that the race be moved to the fall.

The health and safety of runners, volunteers, staff and spectators are the marathon’s top priorities, and the team will continue to work with officials and its medical partner, University Hospitals Sports Medicine, to hold an event that is safe for all who participate. For those who do not feel comfortable with an in-person race, virtual options for all race distances will be available.

A specific date has not been set yet for the fall as the marathon team is actively working with the City of Cleveland on scheduling a date that does not conflict with a Cleveland Browns home game. An update is expected once the 2021 NFL schedule has been released.

“While we are disappointed that we must postpone race weekend, we are doing everything we can to hold an in-person event because our runners deserve it and we appreciate their patience,” said Jack Staph, executive director of the Union Home Mortgage Cleveland Marathon. “Our team is dedicated to hosting a safe, high-quality race as we have done for decades, as well as virtual options, and we look forward to gathering together again in the fall. We are confident in our health and safety plan that has been developed with local and state health officials and University Hospitals.”

Please note: Regisration is still open for the Virtual Event on May 15 & 16, as well as for the Fall, 2021.

I’m not comfortable attending the race in-person. How do I participate virtually?

We added virtual options for all race distances. Information on how to complete one of the virtual distances can be found here.

When is the new race date?

We are working with the city on securing a date that does not conflict with the Cleveland Browns schedule. We expect to have an update after the 2021 NFL schedule is released.

What if I will not be able to attend the new 2021 fall race date?

If you are a 2020 deferral, you may change your deferral to the 2022 event (May 21 & 22). If you are a new registrant in 2021, you may participate in the virtual option or transfer your registration to another participant.

Will there be a transfer fee to switch to another person, the new fall date, or the virtual event?

No, we will not charge a transfer fee for these changes.

I used my 2020 deferral for 2021, but I would prefer to change my deferral to 2022. How can I make the change?

Please submit your request to change by emailing us at info@clevelandmarathon.com. We will make a note of your request and you will receive additional details when registration for 2022 opens.

Why does my registration still show May 15 and 16, 2021 in Race Roster?

Once we have our new fall date, we will update the race dates in the registration system.

I’m fundraising for one of your Official Charity Partners. What will happen to the funds raised if you change the date of the race or if I decide to run the virtual option?

Whether or not you are registered for the virtual race or in-person race, our Charity Partners will continue receiving all of the funds raised. In addition, our current charities will remain on board through 2022 so keep fundraising!

What are the planned safety protocols for 2021?

We take the health and safety of our runners and volunteers very seriously and are working with local and state health departments, as well as our medical partner, University Hospitals, to execute a safe event. As such, there will be a limited number of participants based on local and state guidelines. Health and safety protocols in place for race weekend are as follows:

  1. Social distancing will be enforced at the start and finish lines, as well as during the race.

  2. Masks must be worn at the start and finish lines at all times.

  3. Hand sanitizer must be used before entering the race zone and at restrooms.

  4. Runners must practice safety etiquette on course and maintain social distancing.

*We reserve the right to modify these guidelines based on current conditions.

What will the route be?

Please stay tuned for the 2021 routes.

What will packet pickup look like?

Since there will not be an in-person Health and Fitness Expo this year, bibs and shirts will be picked up on site. More details on logistics to come.
