5.13.13 - Teenage Phenom Alana Hadley Eager To Challenge Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon Elite Field

Charlotte, N.C. teenager one of 34 elite runners competing in the full marathon and 10K

CLEVELAND (May 13, 2013) - Known for its fast, flat conditions that at one time spawned the world record in the 10K, the 2013 Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon and 10K fields include a strong contingent of elite runners from across the country and around the world.

As a whole, the group has already won close 20 road races so far in 2013. In addition to eight elites from the United States, the runners also call Ethiopia, Great Britain, Kenya, Morocco, Russia and Turkey home.

A rising star in the group, Alana Hadley also happens to be the youngest. At just 16 years old, the Charlotte, N.C. 10th grader is a member of the 2016 U.S. Marathon Trials Project and will be making her much-anticipated marathon debut in Cleveland.

Also included are 2012 Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon men's winner Abraham Kogo and runner-up Peter Kembol, as well as the women's champion, Mary Akor. Akor is having perhaps the best year of anyone in the field, having already claimed first place this year at the Pittsburgh, Woodlands and Trinidad & Tobago Marathons. Meanwhile, on the men's side, Mario Macias heads to Cleveland on the heels of winning the Carlsbad and Mercedes Marathons. Everlyne Lagat, the two-time defending champion in the Rite Aid Cleveland 10K, will also be back to defend her title. (A complete list of elite bios is included with this release.)

One of the 50 oldest races in the country, the 2013 Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon will take place May 18-19, 2013. The following opportunities are available for people to participate in the event: full marathon, half marathon, 10K, full marathon walking division, half marathon walking division, 10K walking division, 5K (run or walk) and Kids' Run. To register for any of the events, or learn more, visit www.clevelandmarathon.com.

Last year, both the full marathon and half marathon sold out and the 10K and 5K came close to reaching their respective caps as well. 20,008 people competed in the 2012 events over the course of the weekend. Race organizers are expecting close to 22,000 participants for the 36th annual event.

There are also opportunities for non-profit organizations to raise funds through their participation in the race through Cleveland Marathon Charities, for which information can also be found on the marathon's website.
