3.9.12 - Cleveland Marathon Looking for Volunteers for 35th Annual Race
A wide variety of needs exist across entire race weekend
CLEVELAND (March 9, 2012) – The Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon is seeking volunteers for its 35th annual race weekend, taking place May 18-20 in downtown Cleveland.
Positions are available for groups and individuals, and each volunteer will receive a t-shirt, refreshments and the opportunity to attend a Cleveland Indians game in June. Download the volunteer application at www.clevelandmarathon.com/Volunteer_Info/ or call (216) 464-5510 for more information.
“Without the thousands of volunteers that help us out in so many different ways each year, we’d be unable put on a world-class race,” said Jack Staph, Executive Race Director of the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon. “Whether it’s assisting at the Expo, manning water stations or passing out food and medals at the finish line, the volunteers serve as the backbone of our race weekend.”
The Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon weekend begins Friday with the Health & Fitness Expo presented by Prayers From Maria Children’s Glioma Cancer Foundation at the International Exposition (I-X) Center. The 5K presented by the Organization for Autism Research and the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Red Nose Children's Run highlight Saturday’s activities, while Sunday’s events include the marathon, half marathon, 10K and 26.3 Mile Finish Line Rock Party.
“Volunteering for an event of this magnitude is a very rewarding experience,” said Race Coordinator, Joan Freese. “Runners are so appreciative of the volunteers and 20,000 genuine ‘Thank you’ wishes go a long way! Many of the volunteers come back year after year because they enjoy the atmosphere so much.”
Last year, both the full marathon and half marathon sold out and the 10K and 5K came close to reaching their respective caps as well, with 18,300 people competing over the course of the weekend. Race organizers are expecting close to 20,000 participants for the 35th annual event in May.
There are additional opportunities for non-profit organizations to raise funds through their participation in the race through Cleveland Marathon Charities, for which information can also be found at www.clevelandmarathon.com.
