2009 Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon Recruiting Volunteers
Over 2,000 volunteers are needed to make race weekend a success
CLEVELAND (Feb. 12, 2009) - The 2009 Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K, which hits the streets of Cleveland on Sunday, May 17, depends largely on volunteers to make the experience the best it can be for nearly 11,000 runners and tens of thousands of spectators.
"Race weekend volunteers have the opportunity to be a part of the fun and excitement, plus represent the Rock and Roll capital of America for the runners from around the world," said Joan Freese, race coordinator. "There are so many flexible ways for individuals, families and groups to be a part of the weekend - it's a very rewarding experience."
Volunteers act as race ambassadors and are needed Friday, Saturday and Sunday to staff the Health & Fitness Expo, work with the Kid's Run, man water stations during the race, help with food at the finish line, act as course marshals, gear-checkers, media room escorts and more.
Typical volunteer shifts are as follows:
- Friday, May 15: 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. and 2:00 - 7:00 p.m.
- Saturday, May 16: 9:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m.; 1:00 - 6:30 p.m.; 2:30 - 5:00 p.m.

Volunteers receive training and a free T-shirt for donating their time at the event. Plus, Freese says, 11,000 "thank yous" will make anyone feel good!
In its' 32nd year, The Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon is one of the 50 longest-running marathons in the United States. The inaugural Cleveland Marathon took place in May 1978, and quickly became one of the major road races in the early running boom. The marathon grew to become a world-class operation that continuously attracts a field of more than 10,000 - many of whom are world class runners.
The Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon offers the following opportunities for people to participate in the event: full marathon, half marathon, 10K, full marathon walking division, half marathon walking division, 10K walking division, Kids' Run and 10K Corporate teams..
