11.10.10 - Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon Registration Numbers Up 76 Percent to Date
CLEVELAND (Nov. 10, 2010) – Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K race organizers announced they are expecting another record-breaking year for registered runners and walkers in the May 15, 2011 event. Current registration numbers for the 34th annual event are up 76 percent over the same date last year.
The 2010 marathon on May 16 generated nearly $15 million in economic impact for the city of Cleveland and set a new record for runner participation, with 15,631 registrants. Last year’s race saw a 200 percent increase in runners since 2003 and marked the eighth consecutive year of growth. Currently for the 2011 event, registrations are up 76 percent and race directors are expecting close to 19,000 participants over the May 14 and 15, 2011 race weekend.
“I believe the year-over-year increase in participants in the event is a testament to the strides we’ve taken to acknowledge feedback and improve the race in any way possible based on runner requests,” said Ralph Staph, race director of the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon. “The city of Cleveland and many of its neighborhoods have also recently joined in to support the event and the thousands of runners who fill our streets, and I think that support also spurs on increased participation.”
In the past five years, the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon has added the popular half marathon and 5K events to provide more opportunities for runner and walker participation. In 2007, it orchestrated Cleveland Marathon Charities, a 501(c)3 that rewards non-profit groups for their participation in the race as volunteers or participants. Thousands of participants and volunteers have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for their charities through the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon since 2007, and more than $1 million has been raised and donated to charities since the first event in 1978.
The Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon offers the following opportunities for people to participate in the event: full marathon, half marathon, 10K, full marathon walking division, half marathon walking division, 10K walking division, 5K (run or walk) and Kids’ Run. The events take place May 14 and 15, 2011. To register for any of the events, or learn more, visit www.clevelandmarathon.com.
There are also opportunities for non-profit organizations to raise funds through their participation in the race through Cleveland Marathon Charities, for which information can also be found on the marathon’s website.
